What is the best vacuum cleaner for picking up hair?

with 2 comments

My wife does a lot of hair, and we’ve been looking for a good quality vacuum cleaner to use for picking up hair off of the carpet. Which would be better to use in this situation, an upright vacuum cleaner or a canister/shop vac? Right now we have a Bissell, 12 amp, upright pet hair remover vacuum cleaner.

How to (politely) tell cleaning lady not to use your vacuum?

with 5 comments

Our cleaning lady is a family friend of my in-laws. She does a good job, but she’s VERY hard on equipment. Anything I buy with a sponge or a brush is completely shot within two visits. (I’m talking about things I’d use for months or years before they needed to be replaced.)

We just retrofitted a high-end central vac in our new house, and after she used our powerhead just ONCE, it looks worse than my parents’ that’s been used for over 20 years! (I had assumed she’d use the same vacuum she brought with her to our old place.)

Because this is a family friend, I don’t want to offend her (or my in-laws), but I must insist on keeping my expensive belongings in good condition. I’m thinking of just leaving a note saying that I appreciate her hard work, but that central vacs have unique issues (which they do) that I’d rather not worry about when I’m not there, and asking her if she could please use another vacuum or leave the vacuuming for me.

PS – This lady has been cleaning for my husband & in-laws since before I met my husband. It’s a situation in which they know she needs the money, but she’s a proud person who insists on "earning her keep" as they say. (In other words, it’s not as simple as replacing her or just doing without a cleaning lady, which would be fine with me.)

Any tactful suggestions?
Oh, I love the "suffering" remark.

Like I said, I don’t even need a cleaning lady, and despite what you might think because my family "employs" one, I’m not made of money to just throw around. I’m seeking heartfelt advice on how to keep my stuff in good shape without offending someone. I don’t think that’s unreasonable. If you wanna be sarcastic with somebody, please do it elsewhere.

Does anybody own a Hoover Windtunnel Vacuum?

with 6 comments

Do you like it? I currently have a Eureka Canister vacuum but
it’s getting kind of old. How does the upright compare to a canister vac? Can you clean the carpet & floors ?

Not N&B but figure moms would know?

without comments

Any advice on a handheld vacuum preferably cordless under ? I have been looking through Amazon and am quite frankly overwhelmed with all the reviews. Just when I think I have found one I like I find a bad review on it that I consider to be incompatible with my needs.
So any advice?
Thanks in advance!

NB&B question…
What are your little ones doing right now?
My son is sleeping because it is 3am here. I can’t sleep until I find a vacuum and have been searching for over an hour… Grrrr!!

What replacement bags do I buy for Kenmore Powermate vacuum – 12 amp – canister says Kenmore Whisperer?

with 7 comments

My elderly neighbor needs replacement bags for a Kenmore Powermate sweeper. It is the canister type, blue in color and the canister says Kenmore Whisperer. It is a 12.0 amp sweeper. I am not sure what bags to buy and she threw away the old one. Any ideas? I am going to Sears but I thought someone could advise me as to what type bags to purchase. Thanks

What's a good handheld cordless vacuum?

with one comment

I want to by a good handheld cordless vacuum cleaner. Any suggestions on which ones are good?

I bought a Black & Decker VPX2102 and it was a disaster so I will return it.

1. The off/on switch was almost impossible to operate, it took so much force.
2. It was expensive and, I learned too late, came without the expensive batteries and expensive charger it required. And I was unable to figure out just what I needed to buy until it actually arrived.
3. The worst part: it only ran about 4 minutes before the batteries were drained and had to be recharged.

I want to find a vacuum that runs for a decent length of time and that either includes batteries and charger or whose ads make it clear how to get them.
The Eureka sounds like a good one. But I need it for a boat and it MUST be battery powered and handheld. Eureka does make those, but run time is critical and I must know it will be a decent amount of time.
